About Batanes
About Batanes
Lush green hills, quiet beaches, distinctive architecture, and delectable local cuisine--Batanes’ peaceful and tranquil surroundings provide a taste of off-the-grid living, making it an ideal getaway for those seeking serenity and calm amidst breathtaking landscapes.
It is made up of 10 islands but only 3 are inhabited: Batan (where the capital Basco is located), Sabtang, and Itbayat.
batan
Batan is the main island of Batanes.
This is where you'll find Basco, the provincial capital, and Batanes airport. Besides being home to Basco, it's also the hub for most accommodations and tourist spots in Batanes.
Batan Island is split into two charming areas: North and South.
sabtang
South of Batan lies Sabtang, a picturesque island characterized by its mountainous terrain and steep cliffs. Less populated than Batan, Sabtang is renowned for its well-preserved old stone houses with cogon roofs.
To reach Sabtang from Batan, hop on a boat departing from Ivana Port in Basco between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM, with return trips typically between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
The boat journey takes approximately one hour.
itbayat
The largest island among the three in Batanes is located north of Batan. The island is notable for its coastline with steep cliffs and interiors of rolling hills and grasslands. It also features rainforests and caves. Electricity in Itbayat runs only until 12 midnight and resumes at 6 AM the next day.
To get here, you need to board boats that depart Basco Port in Batan between 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and travel back between 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Depending on the water currents and winds, travel time is around 2-4 hours.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: The ideal time to visit Batanes is during the dry season, which spans from February to early June, bringing pleasant weather with low humidity, minimal rainfall, and clear skies.
April, May or early June are the perfect time to visit as they are the hottest months with minimal rainfall. These are also the busiest months, as it's when tourists flock to enjoy the province's stunning landscapes and welcoming atmosphere.
From December to February, the weather can be quite chilly, so it’s advisable to pack some extra layers.
If your travel plans fall between late June and November, be aware that Batanes is directly exposed to the Pacific Ocean, making it susceptible to typhoons.
